Categorical

This type of reasoning is based on general knowledge about categories and what fits into them.

 

Examples:

  • If you know that all birds lay eggs, you can deduce that sparrows lay eggs.
  • Knowing that all prime numbers cannot be divided by a whole number aside from themselves and 1, then you can deduce that 13 is a prime number.

Linear

Linear reasoning involves linear logic. 

 

For example:

  • In a math equation, if A is greater than B, and B is greater than C, you can deduce that A is greater than C.
  • I am younger than Mia, who is younger than Bea. Therefore, I can deduce that Bea is older than me.

The Process of Deductive Reasoning
